General Purpose Terrain Mat, Roads & Fields.

I will be going to Normandy in June with some friends and as we are leaving our wives behind, it will be a full week of military history with a little beer and wine in the evenings to help us relax after the many miles of walking during the day.

We will be starting with the beaches and then over the course of the week, we plan on working inland. We are staying in a rustic Normandy farmhouse set in typical Bocage countryside and is set central for visiting as much of the area as possible but is quite rural. Due to its location we will probably not be eating out every night so on those occasions, we plan on playing a couple of games of Chain of Command in the evenings along with a couple of bottles of wine to help us with making those tactical decisions.

We thought it would be ideal to try and recreate part of a particular action of some place that we had visited that day, onto the table top, having the benefit of seeing the actual terrain up close of what was actually fought over.

Between us, we had to decide what each of us would bring and what scale we would play the game in. We opted for 20mm as one of the lads, Steve Lygo has a vast WW2 collection in this scale of figures and vehicles, plus it would take up less room than 28mm transporting it in the car. John Warren will be bringing along some 20mm buildings, trees and hedges and I said I will provide the terrain mat and roads.

John stayed at the farmhouse last year and informs me that there is not a suitable table to game on, so I have purchased a couple of fold up pasting tables from a DIY store which won't take up too much room in the car and will give us a playing area of just under 6 x 4 foot.

Having recently made a Snow Mat and flexible roads, I decided to do the same for the Normandy table, making the mat 6 x 5 foot, so I could also use it with my existing 10 x 5 foot table. Also the mat rolls up, keeping storage space down in the back of the car. Hopefully we will have enough room to be able to take some clothes with us for the week?????

Whilst making the terrain mat and roads, I also made a few fields, these were really just test pieces before making the bigger mat and I also promised John I would make him a few fields for his Napoleonics that he is doing in a smaller scale.

I also just realised that I will have to do some flexible river/streams ready for Normandy and will include a step by step guide on methods and materials for these, along with the summer mat, roads and fields in the back of my 'Setting the Scene' book that I am working on.

Flexible roads and fields, ideal for following the contours of your hills.

I have placed a few items underneath the terrain mat to give an impression of rolling countryside and the mat is thick enough that it doesn't crease and the contours are gradual, which is more ideal for placing troops.

To give you an idea of scale, I have placed a few 28mm Perry ACW figures on the table.

With the flexible roads on the table, along with some 28mm Warlord Games, Bolt Action figures and vehicles.

SETTING THE SCENE (part 3) Hedgerows & Trees for Winter & Summer.

It has been a while since my last post and part of the reason for this was the amount of terrain I have been making, 140 x trees and lots of hedges.

There is 88 x Pine and 52 x deciduous trees and I have used some of the Deciduous trees along with most of the hedges for my summer terrain.

Although 'Setting The Scene' will primarily be a Winter Theme, I will also include in the back of the book the summer versions of 'how to make' trees, hedges, flexible roads, terrain mat and anything else that I do between now and getting the book finished.

Before I go any further with this post I would just like to show you some superb figures and vehicle that Nick over at Moitereisbuntewelt.blogspot has done for me, in exchange for some of my terrain.

I just need to do the snow basing to the figures and snow effects to the half track but I couldn't resist including them in some staged shots later on in this post.

For more details of these, visit Nick's excellent blog over at

http://moitereisbuntewelt.blogspot.co.uk/2016/03/6th-ahpc-vi-submission-28mm-us-winter.html

Nick has also kindly done a painting guide for the figures at http://moitereisbuntewelt.blogspot.co.uk/2016/03/us-winter-infantry-colour-guide.html

Back to the terrain and here is the latest batch.

I thought it would be nice to build the trees into the hedgerow, rather than have them separate as I already have individually based trees. Some of the separate hedges are from 'Last Valley' which I have re flocked to blend in with the hedgerows that I have made.

Summer version first.

Winter version.

A few staged shots with Nicks superb American troops and halftrack.

Dismounted Cavalry & Horse Holders ACW.

Over the weekend I finally got around to painting these figures that I have had sitting on the unpainted lead pile for a couple of years.

It made a nice change from making terrain and finishes off my small ACW collection. All the figures are from Perry Miniatures.

Here they are mixed in with my Perry plastic figures.

SALUTE 2016

Goodies from Salute. I managed to resist buying any figures this year but I did get six wagons/carts ready for the soon to be released 'Sharp Practice V2'.

This year was more of a social day for me, having lunch twice with two different groups of friends, also chatting with friends from the Loughton Strike Force who had put on a Participation Game and a couple of Bloggers, Mike Whitaker 'Trouble at T'mill' blog and Michael 'Dalauppror' blog, who was running his wonderful Battle at Foteviken 1134 game.

Unfortunately I missed out on the Blogger 1pm meeting due to already being at lunch with friends.

Some pictures of the day.

Dalauppror, Michael and Jonas's excellent looking Battle at Foteviken game.

Gary and Martin from 'Loughton Strike Force' with their wonderful 'Russo-Finnish War 1940' game.

On a separate note, I would like to thank Carlo from 'With Pyjamas Through The Desert' blog fame, for his kindness in sending me a free copy of his excellent rule book 'The Sands of Sudan' after asking his advice about how to go about publishing your own book. Carlo wouldn't even let me pay for the postage from Australia to UK, just goes to show what a great bunch of guys and girls our blogging community is. I thank you Carlo.

SETTING THE SCENE (part 4) The Defence Line, plus more terrain.

The latest batch of terrain I have been making for 'Setting The Scene' is some log defences, dug outs, Telegraph poles, wire fencing, gates and winterising the basing on some figures.

The defences.

Telegraph Poles. Two different types of these, I also made extra to add to my summer terrain.

Gates. Again extra made for summer terrain.

Barbed wire fencing, (16 x feet).

I did a few test pieces for basing my figures. I also bought some small white dice whilst at Salute, I think they will be a little less intrusive with a winter table.

Happy with the basing, I then based and winterised these lovely figures that Nick aka moitereisbuntewelt.BlogSpot had painted for me.

I also dirtied up the snow on my roads and around the dug outs, as I imagine there would have been a lot of foot traffic turning that white snow into a muddy slush.

A few pictures of the defence line being occupied.

What is that spotted in the distance.

Hope you enjoyed?

Part 5 of 'Setting The Scene' is going to be lots of buildings, as long as I don't get side tracked with the new Sharp Practice v 2.

SETTING THE SCENE part 5 Buildings and Wagons.

Latest batch for 'Setting the Scene' is laser-cut buildings and wagons, also a scratch built small lake/pond.

Although I have winterised these buildings, I have done them in a way that I can remove the snow and use them in their original state for a sunnier setting. I have also used this method with some of my existing resin buildings, as you will see in the following pictures.

The laser-cut buildings are from Charlie Foxtrot and the wagons are from Warbases. The resin Church and stable is from Total Battle Miniatures. I have textured and prepped the laser-cut stuff before painting and there will be a full tutorial of how I did this and the temporary snow effects in ''Setting the Scene' when it gets released.

The following pictures show both the summer and winter options.

Here you can see a comparison shot of the laser-cut building on the left and the resin building on the right.

And the same buildings with the winter effects.

I have set the scene for a few action shots, so you get to see the buildings from different angles.

SETTING THE SCENE part 6 Graveyard, Ruins & first vignette.

This post covers a graveyard for my church as I didn't want to winterise my existing one, plus I had a spare Renedra grave sprue left over which I could use.

Warlord Miniatures 3 x building ruined Hamlet, plus the graveyard in the background.

My first of several vignettes that I plan on making for this project. This was a Corgi die-cast 1/48 scale Halftrack that I picked up from ebay for the bargain price of £3 due to the fact that it had a track missing on one side.

I am not that bothered about the halftrack being a slightly larger scale as I had planned for it to be ditched down the side of the road and half covered in snow, plus it gave me the chance to have a practice at painting US armour (need to go a lighter colour shade) and at £3 if it hadn't worked out then it wouldn't break the bank.  (Sprayed black and repainted)

On the table.

NORMANDY 2016

I have just returned from a week in Normandy with a couple of good friends visiting the landing beaches, gun batteries, museums, paying our respects at the many cemeteries and trying to cover as many of the engagements both small and large as far as the Falaise Pocket.

Including the drive from the UK and back we covered 1400 miles and I took a couple of hundred photographs and I am now trying to sort through them all and put the picture to the place which is easier said than done.

I will show a couple of pictures on this blog but it will be too time consuming to start labelling them all. The picture above is looking along SWORD BEACH from inside a bunker/pillbox.

Brecourt Maner.  The Gun Battery would have been dug in along the hedgerow in the background. Whilst we were there, these re-enactors just happened to turn up, so it was perfect timing to have our pictures taken with them. John Warren on the left, our three friends and then myself and Steve Lygo on the right.

I think you all should know this place from that famous WW2 war film with the US Paratrooper dangling from the church roof by his parachute.

Thank you John and Steve for such a memorable holiday.

SETTING THE SCENE part 7. US Armoured Vehicles

Latest batch for 'Setting The Scene' is the American vehicles which I have just finished assembling and painting. This now gives me 15 x vehicles including the knocked out halftrack that I did in a previous post, along with the halftrack that Nick from https://moitereisbuntewelt.blogspot.co.uk/ painted for me.

I have tried to get a reasonable colour match with the vehicle that Nick painted but I don't have an air brush and compressor plus I don't have the skill or time to put the effort in when painting a large batch of vehicles. Nick's Rubicon halftrack is on the right and my Warlord Halftrack is on the left.

I have also copied a few ideas from 'John Bond's Wargaming Stuff ' which is an excellent blog
http://iagsmgm.blogspot.co.uk/2016/05/stuart-m5a1-tank-and-willys-jeep-28mm.html.
I have drilled holes for small magnets to go into both vehicles and crew so that they can be changed over. I want to be able to use my jeeps for British and Russian as well as American forces, so just need to buy some additional crew. Also I have several crew for one of my tanks, so I can change them over and have them bailing out of a smoking vehicle.

I have placed magnets in blue tack which is useful for holding the figure in place when painting.

These tank crew are from Artizan Designs and painting these up I realised they are the only figures I have painted this year apart from 12 x dismounted ACW cavalry that I painted in an earlier post. So half way through July and it has been all terrain making apart from these vehicles. My next couple of posts will be German vehicles and then getting on with the infantry (at long last) for both sides.

Some action shots.

I am now off to order the 'TOO FAT LARDIES' SUMMER SPECIAL 2016 which has 'The Ardennes' with Chain of Command' which tick my box on both accounts.

SETTING THE SCENE part 8 GERMAN VEHICLES.

I have finally finished the German vehicles and crew for part 8 of 'Setting the Scene' which has taken me about 6 x weeks on and off. At least now I can get on with what I enjoy most and that is painting the infantry, which will be posted in three batches, Panzergrenadiers, Volks-Grenadiers and US Infantry.

I have used a couple of halftracks from my non - winter collection by manning them with a few winter crew, whilst not perfect, it is a quick way of making the numbers up.

And with the rest of the half tracks.

King Tiger

A couple of big cats, the King Tiger alongside a Panther.

The latest batch.

I had a bit of fun trying to recreate an iconic picture from the Ardennes with a little vignette of  'it's not Joachim Peiper'

Over the coming  weeks I will be putting a selection of figures, terrain and books up for sale, so keep checking this blog if interested.

These figures are from Gripping Beast, Perry Miniatures and the two unpainted figures I bought from a Russian chap on the Steve Dean Forum a couple of years ago who sculpted his own figures including Cowboys, Medieval and Norman figures. They are lovely figures and a good match for the rest, I just didn't get around to painting them.

There are 49 x painted and 2 x unpainted figures, plus 2 x hand painted flags and 2 x movement trays.  All the shields are hand painted and not transfers. I have priced these up at less than £7 a figure which works out at £345.

Vikings.

There are 4 x painted and 26 x unpainted figures plus a Raven Banner. These are from Wargames Foundry and Gripping Beast. They are lovely figures with lots of character and I am selling them at £6.50 for a painted figure and .50p each for the unpainted figures which comes in at £40.

Ruins and barricades.

I think these buildings were made by Snap Dragon which would mean they are now out of production. The 28mm figure in the picture is not included but just to give you an idea of scale.

There are 28 x pieces of painted terrain which I am selling for £180.

Two Ruins.

Again, the figure is not included in the sale but just for scale. £55.

Hills

There are 12 x hills in total, which I am selling in three different batches. They are all made from polystyrene with a hardboard base and covered in tile grout and PVA glue and sand, then painted and flocked.

I have built stone walls on some of the hills so that they follow the contours and I have made all the slopes so that you can actually stand your figures on them without them falling over. The 28mm figures are just for scale purposes.

4 x Hill Set. This includes a corner piece, a straight edge piece and two gentle hills. £90.

3 x Hill Set. This includes a sunken road, a road over a small hill with walls and a walled enclosure on top of a hill.  £90.

5 x Hill Set. This is a BIG ONE and comes in 5 x parts which can be used as one big hill with a ridge line and the base measures 60 x  28 inches (152cm x 71cm) and the ridge line measures 38 x 9 inches (97cm x 23cm).

You can also use them in different combinations as 5 x individual hills or in pairs on corners or up against the table edge. £220.

10 x Tree Bases (48 x trees and shrubs on textured bases) 28mm figure for scale. £150

BOCAGE. 14 X Pieces. These were made by LAST VALLEY and they are suitable for both 20mm and 28mm scale. See pictures of 20mm and 28mm tanks for scale. £170.

There are 3 x hedgerows with built in trenches. 20mm and 28mm figures for scale.

An enclosed field.

2 x Corner pieces.

All together.

A Thatched cottage and grounds with wattle fencing and pigsty, with owner and pig included in price. The roof lifts off and the doors are on hinges so they will open and close. This is the Perry Miniatures cottage with conversion work on the roof. £50.

Obviously there are some big items up for sale that would probably be better if the buyer collected rather than posting due to cost and risk of damage, so I am happy to travel (within reason) and meet up halfway with the buyer (I live in Essex) or meet up at a show. (Warfare in Reading November, Salute next April or possibly one of the other shows if worth my while)

I will only charge for actual postage and am open to reasonable offers. If interested contact me at

SETTING THE SCENE part 9 - Volksgrenadiers.

I recently finished painting my Volksgrenadier Assault Platoon and supports for the 'Setting The Scene' project. I have based the platoon on a list from the 'Too Fat Lardies' Chain of Command forum.

There are some nice little touches with this list that will make it quite different and fun to game.

For example as part of the platoon HQ, you have a 3 x man Rifle Grenade Team instead of your usual mortar team.

Squad 1 and 2 are your assault squads as they are all tooled up with the STG44 or MP40's and a couple of Panzerfaust.

Squad 3 is your back up with 2 x MG42 Teams and some more automatic weapons.

So I imagine a platoon with weaknesses being volksgrenadiers but on the flipside a lot of firepower with all those automatic weapons.

Maybe I can talk Richard Clarke into coming up with a scenario and game for these, that I could then put in the back of the book, along with lots of pictures of the game.

The Platoon and supports.

     Assault Squads 1 & 2 with STG44, MP40 and Panzerfaust.

Squad 3 with the MG's

Support Options - ATG, sniper, FOO, mortar, MMG.

Is this the start of the counter-attack somewhere in the Ardennes December 1944??????

In these pictures you can see the Senior and Junior leaders with their hex shaped bases and dice wells. The senior leaders have a slightly larger base.

The idea with the dice well is to indicate how many command initiatives the leader currently has. Senior leader starting with a 3 and Junior leader a 2. I have done them in white so that they are a little less intrusive on a snow base.

I have also done dice wells for the MG teams so that I can place the 'shock dice' for the squad in the base rather than having the dice trailing behind the squad. The shock dice are usually red but again if you don't want them to be so intrusive you can use white dice for the winter setting. Support options, as with the Panzerschrek, also get a 'dice well' where needed to indicate how many rounds they have used or got left.

The figures are either Artizan Design or Warlord Games. I pinched the idea from the Bolt Action forum where somebody had used the plastic winter Russians with overcoats and converted them into Germans. Ideal for the Volksgrenadiers.

A couple of pictures slightly clearer.

Platoon HQ with the two Senior Leaders, medic and the three man Rifle Grenade Team.

I still have the Panzergrenadier, Fallschirmjager and American infantry platoons to paint. I also plan on winterising my train station and railway track, along with some appropriate signage before I can start putting it all together in book form.

I was hoping to get it all finished by the anniversary of the start of The Battle of the Bulge on 16th December but I might end up going slightly over, which will have been a year in the making.

I have also put the items on the blog that didn't sell, on ebay and reduced the price yet again, if you want to check the links. I have scheduled them to start on Sunday 23rd October.

SETTING THE SCENE - part 11 - American G.I. / Fallschirmjager / Winter Railway

It has been over three months since my last post, so my apologies for this and also not giving feedback to your blog posts, although I have still been visiting you all.

Family life had to take priority during November and December and then with a new games room being built in the form of a Log Cabin I was not in a position to take pictures for the blog. That has all changed and now I am back up and running.

The cabin is well insulated and has a superb heating and aircon unit, so ideal for all year round gaming and I have installed 6 x 5ft daylight tubes directly over the table for maximum light when taking photos and gaming. I have lost the all-round backdrop from my old games room but I have made brackets for 5ft backdrops to slot into the table when taking pictures.

I have kept the table the same size 5 x 10ft but I now have more room around the table for socialising. I managed to salvage the old table but I will be making a new mat to go over the top.

I have not had a game in the cabin yet but I will be having a few friends around the beginning of April for a Battle of the Bulge game and there will be a game report to follow.

I have been busy with the hobby as you are about to see and I now have all the material I need ready to finish off my book 'SETTING THE SCENE'.

I will start with a couple of extra vignettes that I have done, a simple horse and cart, followed by some Fallschirmjagers on the back of a King Tiger.

This is quite a famous picture of some Fallschirmjager on the back of a Tiger tank taken at the time of the Ardennes conflict and which I have tried to copy.

I have adapted some existing scenery with temporary snow effects, the Chateau converted into Hotel Ardennes, made a load of road and street signs, adapted some more river sections and made a scratch build bridge from a couple of pieces off of a Scalextric set, a winter railway, shell destroyed woods and some large haystacks.

The last two items I was inspired from Al and Adrian Deacon's excellent FOY and STAVELOT game table that they did recently and which has been doing the rounds on the forums and shows. The haystacks are a lot bigger than the ones I originally made a couple of years back and watching the FOY episode on Band of Brothers again, I could see how much bigger they were. My original haystack is on the bottom right.

I have also finished painting up the American forces and with all the support options, plus the figures for a Rifle or Armoured Rifle Platoon it came in at over 100 x figures. You can see pictures of the figures with the latest batch of terrain as a backdrop.

And for something slightly warmer, experimenting with Jungle terrain bases. A Perry Miniatures 28mm figure for scale.

BIG CoC - The Bulge.

Big Chain of Command - Battle of the Bulge, just to clarify the heading and to ensure you that you are not visiting some dodgy site.

My blog posts are becoming a bit infrequent of late, so I thought I would update you with a game I put on recently, when I invited a few friends to play on my new winter terrain that I finished making at long last.

I decided to play the Too Fat Lardies, Big Chain of Command WW2 rules as there were three players plus myself umpiring. I also had that desire of wanting to get as much of my collection of winter figures and vehicles on the table as possible, as it was the first time I have actually gamed with them.

I have made some amendments and added a few house rules to the original set and I have put these, along with the lists at the end of this post for anyone who may be interested.

Two of the players controlled a Volksgrenadier and Panzergrenadier platoon each, along with their own supports. They also had their own morale card and 5 x command dice each.

The single American player had one platoon and supports, which were marked out on the map and hidden on overwatch, plus one morale card and 5 x command dice . He also had additional armoured supports, which would be controlled with 3 x command dice and re-rolling any 5's and 6's as they would not benefit from building up CoC dice or keeping the initiative with a double 6.

Anyway, for those that may be interested, you can read more at the end of this post. For the rest of you, here is a bunch of pictures of the actual table layout that we used on the day but not of the actual game that was played.

A map of the table with the Germans approaching from the left and the Americans deployed and hidden on overwatch, anywhere from the right, up as far as the red line.

The table (5' x 10') layout and view from the German approach.

             BIG CoC – THE BULGE

VEHICLE MOVEMENT– THIS REPRESENTS THE WEATHER CONDITIONS AT THE TIME HAVING A BIG IMPACT ON THE SURROUNDING AREA, CAUSING MONUMENTAL TRAFFIC JAMS AND ANY ATTEMPT AT VEHICLES LEAVING THE ROADS BECOMING BOGGED DOWN IN THE MUD AND SNOW.

ON ROAD (AND RAILWAY TRACK) -  ALL VEHICLES ROLL 2 X D6, IF A DOUBLE IS ROLLED THEN TEMPORARILY IMMOBILISED. ON SUBSIQUENT ACTIVATIONS ROLL A D6, FREEING THEMSELVES ON A 5 OR 6 AND MOVING THAT FAR IN INCHES. HOWEVER, A ROLL OF 1 WILL IMMOBILISE THEM FOR THE REST OF THE GAME.  (wheeled vehicles and King Tiger need to roll a 6 to free themselves).

IF A VEHICLE IS BLOCKING A ROAD THEN ANOTHER VEHICLE OF THE SAME SIZE OR BIGGER MAY ATTEMPT TO PUSH THAT VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD, ROLLING A D6 AND MOVING THAT FAR IN INCHES.

OFF ROAD– ALL VEHICLES ROLL 3 X D6 AND DISCARD THE FOLLOWING DICE:

WHEELED VEHICLE AND KING TIGER – DISCARD 2 X HIGHEST DICE

HALFTRACK – DISCARD HIGHEST AND LOWEST DICE

TRACKED – DISCARD 2 X LOWEST DICE

IF A DOUBLE IS ROLLED THEN TEMPORARILY IMMOBILISED. ON SUBSIQUENT ACTIVATIONS ROLL A D6, FREEING THEMSELVES ON A 6 AND MOVING THAT FAR IN INCHES. HOWEVER, A ROLL OF 1 OR 2 WILL IMMOBILSE THEM FOR THE REST OF GAME. (wheeled vehicles and King Tiger immobilised on a 1,2 or 3)

IF IMMOBILISED FOR THE REST OF THE GAME BUT NOT UNDER FIRE THEN THE PLAYER HAS THE CHOICE OF ABANDONING THE VEHICLE FOR NO LOSS OF MORALE BUT IF HE CHOOSES TO FIRE ITS WEAPONS, THEN LOSS OF MORALE WILL APPLY AS NORMAL IF THE VEHICLE GETS DESTROYED BY ENEMY FIRE.

MOVEMENT SUMMARY AFTER BEING IMMOBILISED (rolling a double)

ON ROAD

5 0R 6 -  FREE TO MOVE (wheeled vehicles/King Tiger need a 6)

2,3 OR 4 – STILL IMMOBILISED

1 – PERMANENTLY IMMOBILISED

OFF ROAD

6 – FREE TO MOVE

3, 4 or 5 -STILL IMMOBILISED

1 or 2 – PERMANENTLY IMMOBILISED (wheeled vehicles/King Tiger 1,2 or3)

MOVEMENT ON FOOT

ROAD AND RAILWAY TRACK AND BUILT UP AREAS – BROKEN GROUND (AS PER BOOK PAGE 28)

OPEN GROUND AND WOODS – HEAVY GOING (PAGE 28)

ALL HEDGES, FENCES AND WALLS CLASSED AS MEDIUM OBSTACLES, DISCARD THE HIGHEST DICE.

COVER FROM FIRE

WALLS AND SNOW BANKS – HEAVY COVER

FENCES AND HEDGES – SOFT COVER

WIRE FENCE – NO COVER

NO PATROL PHASE OR JUMP OFF POINTS

US FORCES ARE EITHER MAPPED ON TABLE ON OVERWATCH OR WILL ARRIVE BY ROAD.

VOLKSGRENADIER VEHICLES WILL ARRIVE BY ROAD OR RAILWAY LINE. DUE TO THEIR LACK OF TRANSPORT THE INFANTRY CAN ALSO ARRIVE ANYWHERE ALONG THEIR BASE LINE.

PANZERGRENADIER INFANTRY MUST ENTER THE TABLE INITIALLY MOUNTED IN THEIR HALFTRACKS AND ARRIVE BY ROAD OR RAILWAY.

THIS WILL HELP TO REFLECT THE NIGHTMARE TRANSPORT PROBLEMS AND BOTTLENECKS SUFFERED ON THE ROADS BY BOTH SIDES. (ANY US INFANTRY SUPPORT WILL ALSO BE ARRIVING BY VEHICLE ON ROAD)

SMALL WOODEN BRIDGE (UMPIRES EYES ONLY) -TEST TO SEE IF COLAPSE WHEN VEHICLE TRAVELS OVER IT.

SMALL VEHICLE (JEEP, KUBELWAGON) – NO EFFECT.

MEDIUM VEHICLE (TRUCK, HALFTRACK, A/C) – BRIDGE COLLAPSES ON A D6 ROLLING A 6

HEAVY VEHICLE (TANK, TANK DESTROYER) – BRIDGE COLLAPSES ON A D6 ROLLING A 5 OR 6

VEHICLE WILL BE ABANDONED BUT NO LOSS OF FORCE MORALE UNLESS VEHICLE ALREADY UNDER FIRE AT THE TIME.

RIFLE PLATOON– REGULAR - 5 X COMMAND DICE
MEDIC/SNIPER/ATG with junior leader/3XMMG/3XBAZOOKA TEAMS.
OFF TABLE – MAKE A LIST AND DESIGNATE WHICH SUPPORTS ARE ARRIVING ON WHICH OF THEIR TWO ROADS.
These may start arriving on the start of turn two or after you have obtained and spent a full CoC dice to do this.
YOU HAVE 3 X COMMAND DICE FOR YOUR VEHICLES = RE-ROLL any 5’s and 6’s as these can’t be used for keeping the initiative for next phase with double 6’s or adding to CoC dice with 5’s.
WHEN YOU DEBUS THE OCCUPANTS WILL THEN BE CONTROLLED BY YOUR PLATOON’s 5 X COMMAND DICE AND NOT THE 3 X VEHICLE COMMAND DICE.

VOLKSGRENADIER & PANZERGRENADIER
IN ADDITION TO THEIR OWN SENIOR LEADER THE GERMAN PLAYERS GET TO SHARE THE OVERALL KAMPFGROUPPE COMMANDER ON ALTERNATE TURNS.
Whoever is controlling the KG Commander at the time, will count any double 6’s to keep the initiative in the next phase. If the non-controlling German player rolls the double six, keeping the initiative in the next phase is ignored.
KAMPFGROUPPE LEADERSHIP IS USED THE SAME AS A SENIOR LEADER IN A VEHICLE BUT INSTEAD OF JUST HAVING CONTROL OF A THREE VEHICLE PLATOON/TROOP HE CAN ACTIVATE ANY OF HIS VEHICLES (VOLKS OR PANZERGRENADIER PLAYER, DEPENDING ON WHO’S TURN) ON THE TABLE VIA HIS VEHICLE RADIO.
THE ABOVE WILL HELP THE GERMAN PLAYERS TO KEEP THEIR VEHICLES ACTIVATED BUT ONLY HAVING THIS BENEFIT ON ALTERNATE TURNS REPRESENTS THE AMOUNT OF RADIO TRAFFIC CONFUSION, POOR SIGNALS AND HAVING TO BE MINDFUL OF THE ENEMY LISTENING IN.
THE KAMPFGROUPPE COMMANDER IS IN A SCHWIMMWAGEN (WHEELED VEHICLE) AND WILL BE ACTIVATED ON A 4. SEE 11.4 COMMAND BY RADIO, PAGE 51 MAIN RULE BOOK.
THE KAMPFGROUPPE COMMANDER IS NOT SUBJECT TO ENEMY FIRE BUT JUST A NOMINAL FIGURE PLACED ON EITHER THE VOLKSGRENADIER OR PANZERGRENADIER PLAYERS SIDE OF THE TABLE TO INDICATE WHICH PLAYER HAS CONTROL.
INFILTRATION COMMANDOS (GERMAN PLAYERS EYES ONLY)
OTTO SKORZENY’S ENGLISH SPEAKING GERMANS DRESSED IN AMERICAN UNIFORMS AND SENT BEHIND THE ENEMY LINES TO CAUSE HAVOC AND CONFUSION.
2 X GERMAN INFANTRY WITH SMG’s, DRESSED AS MP’S IN JEEP.
ACTIVATED WITH A FULL COC DICE.
PLACED ON ONE OF THE TWO ENEMY ENTRY POINTS. THEY WILL PREVENT ENEMY SUPPORTS DESIGNATED TO ENTER AT THAT POINT OF THE TABLE.
CAN ONLY BE REMOVED BY AMERICAN PLAYER USING A FULL COC DICE OR MOVING A LEADER AND TEAM THAT ARE ALREADY ON TABLE INTO CLOSE COMBAT. (THE CLOSE COMBAT RATHER THAN SHOOTING, REPRESENTS THE GI’s HAVING TO GET UP CLOSE TO VERIFY THE MP’s ARE INFACT GERMANS)

THERE WILL BE NO MORALE EFFECT FOR THE GERMAN PLAYER WITH THE LOSS OF THEIR COMMANDOS AS THEY WILL BE OUT OF CONTACT WITH THEIR PARENT UNIT BUT IF THE GI’s LOSE THE COMBAT THEN A MORALE TEST NEEDS TO BE TAKEN AS NORMAL.
THE AMERICAN PLAYER WILL NOT KNOW ABOUT SKORZENY’s COMMANDOS UNTIL THEY HAVE BEEN PLACED ON THE TABLE (OTHERWISE HE MAY BE TEMPTED TO GET AS MUCH OF HIS SUPPORTS ON THE TABLE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE BEFORE YOU REACH A FULL COC DICE AND DEPLOY YOUR COMMANDO)

AMERICAN BRIEFING
The 560th Volksgrenadier and 116thPanzer Divisions were moving in the direction of Houffalize and would soon cut off the defenders of St. Vith.
Task Force Cherry has been given the job of forming part of the defensive line in front of St. Vith in one of the outlying villages with a composite force from a platoon of the 423rd Infantry that had been the 106thDivisions headquarters guard, some Engineers, elements of the 82ndAirborne Division, a troop of the 87th Armoured Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, along with some armour from the 31st Tank and 814th Tank Destroyer Battalions.
Most of the Task Force would be in reserve in St.Vith, ready to support your front line or respond elsewhere if needed.
The main bridge over the River Our which runs through your village must be kept open at all costs for the withdrawal of friendly forces and to prevent entrapment of the rest of the Division.
You have the following units to deploy as you see fit on the map hidden and on overwatch.
 RIFLE PLATOON – REGULAR - 5 X COMMAND DICE
HQ – 2 X SENIOR LEADERS WITH CARBINE OR SMG - BAZOOKA TEAM, MEDIC.
SQUADS ONE TO THREE
JUNIOR LEADER
BAR TEAM 2 X CREW WITH 1 X RIFLEMAN
RIFLE TEAM – 8 RIFLEMEN.
SNIPER
ATG with junior leader and 5 x crew
3 X MMG TEAMS
3 X BAZOOKA TEAMS.
Due to heavy enemy pressure along the entire front, Divisional Headquarters are reluctant to release the rest of your Task Force unless the situation becomes critical, so you will need to use a full CoC dice to get things moving.
Only then will you be given 3 x command dice for your vehicle supports and you may reroll any 5’s and 6’s as these have no effect towards your CoC dice or taking the initiative in the next phase with a double 6.
There are two roads that your supports may arrive on. Make a list of which supports are coming on which of the two roads.

       GERMAN BRIEFING

The 560th Volksgrenadier and 116th Panzer Divisions were moving in the direction of Houffalize and would soon cut off the defenders of St. Vith.

Kampfgrouppe von Green has been assigned the critical task of capturing the bridge over the River Our which runs through one of the outlying villages South of St. Vith, preventing the escape of a large part of an American Division.

Following a massive German pre – bombardment the way ahead looks clear. Maybe the enemy has pulled back or better still, been wiped out after that severe stonking.

Dusk is fast approaching so you need to press on, clear the village and secure the bridge. If only the bloody roads didn’t cause such delays, you could be halfway to the River Meuse by now, repeating history in the footsteps of a Panzer Division under an obscure General, Erwin Rommel, who in 1940 reached the Meuse in three days.

von Green has his work cut out trying to coordinate the slower moving foot sloggers of his Volksgrenadier elements with his faster moving motorised Panzergrenadiers.

To make sure things run smoothly, von Green will need to spend alternate turns (phases) with each of the German players, using his leadership influence to keep things moving.

(Either the Volksgrenadier or Panzergrenadier player, keeps the initiative next turn with 2 or more x 6’s rolled on the CoC dice, when the KG leader is allocated to that particular player).  KG von Green needs to be activated on a 4 with one of your command dice each phase if you wish to use his leadership.

The faster moving Panzergrenadiers must enter the table by road or rail, whilst still mounted in their halftracks. Once the troops dismount, von Green will have no influence over them as they will not be in contact with the vehicle radio and so, only be controlled by the platoon command dice.

You have the option of sending two teams (one for each player) of INFILTRATION COMMANDOS ahead to cause disruption and confusion with the enemy by preventing enemy support elements from arriving on the table by the road your commandos are occupying. Each German player needs to allocate a full CoC dice to activate his commando team.

Although you have a lot of support options at your disposal, you may find you are limited in what you can control in each phase with only 5 x command dice (plus von Green’s 3 x vehicle activations every other phase).

“Soldiers of the West Front! Your great hour has arrived. Large attacking armies have started against the Anglo-Americans. I do not have to tell you anything more than that. You feel it yourselves.

                                                          WE GAMBLE EVERYTHING!

You carry with you the holy obligation to give everything to achieve things beyond human possibilities for our Fatherland and our Fuhrer!”

Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt, German Commander-in-Chief in the West, 15 December 1944

1/72 Early WW2 German Plastics plus Back of Beyond.

The last time I owned a box of 1/72 scale plastic soldiers was as a child in the 60's and 70's. They were the bendy plastic Airfix figures which would shed their paint when they got bent.

Gamers who collect plastic figures these days have obviously overcome this problem with better techniques, acrylic paints, primers and maybe the manufactures make the figures less bendy. Whatever, there are a lot of great looking plastic painted figures out there now.

I needed a 20mm early WW2 motorised German infantry platoon plus a couple of armoured cars for a campaign that my friend, John Warren is hosting. I picked up a box of German trucks and armoured cars off of the Plastic Soldier Company stand at Salute.

The two schwimmwagen in the picture above, were given to me by a friend. They were painted in late war camo but were in a bit of a sorry state, with the vehicle on the left only had three wheels. I took the spare wheel off the bonnet and glued it into the wheel arch and then stuck an aircraft recognition flag where the spare had been. I ripped the plastic crew out and replaced with AB figures, sprayed black and then repainted.

I needed a platoon of early war German infantry, so checked out the web for plastic and metal figures in 20mm. I came across a Russian company called Zvezda, that do a box of 35 x plastic figures for £8.60 including postage. They also do smaller boxes of 4 or 5 figures with different poses for just over £3. They also do a good range of support for your platoon and BEF too.

Some of the figures need a little assembling with the odd arm, leg or backpack.

The figures in the smaller boxes are a hard plastic, which is good for gluing and painting but the rifles are a bit fragile and I don't know if they will stand the test of time.

The figures in the big platoon box are made of a different plastic not quite as hard, so you wont get breakages but the plastic is a bugger for trying to get rid of the mould lines, although to be fair, there isn't many.

I needed another LMG team for my 4th squad, so I painted up a couple of AB mid/late war figures. As they were kneeling, I think they should be okay, as you can't see the lack of jackboots.

To give you an idea of size comparison, here they are next to an AB (I think) figure.

I have also been painting up some Back of Beyond figures for my friend Steve Lygo, in exchange for his 20mm WW2 collection. So there will be more of these in future blog posts.

SOLDIER, SAILOR & HORSE - Back of Beyond - The Reds.

My friend Steve Lygo will be pleased that I have just finished painting some Reds for his Back of Beyond collection. I will be going back to WW2 plus some terrain and buildings next, before painting his Whites and Chinese Warlord collections, sorry Steve but you will have to wait a little while

I will show the colours I have used for painting the bases for these figures, as Steve also has someone else painting Back of Beyond figures for him and he wants the bases to match.

If you live in the UK then we have Do It Yourself stores named B&Q. They sell water based household paint that come in test pots for about £2 and you get a lot more paint than you would for the same money from your hobby paints. This makes them ideal for painting the bases on your figures and also your terrain. B&Q do a range called Valspar Collections, The Bookcase.

They have a good range of earthy colours which make them ideal for any groundwork and they have a nice matt finish.

After basing and priming the figure I paint the first layer of ground colour onto the base, before I actually paint the figure. I find this quicker as you can just slap it on with a big brush and not worry if it goes over the feet and legs of the unpainted figure.

The colours I use are as follows -

Start with the darkest colour and then drybrush with the lighter shades, finishing off with Vallejo Ivory.

On with the Reds. I have painted five units of foot and two horse.

And the usual action shots.

My apologies for the delay with getting 'Setting The Scene' published, everything is done apart from the graphic design hurdle, hopefully it will be worth the wait.

That's it for now folks.

WW2 Russian Infantry - Buildings and another Orchard.

It has been a while since my last post but I have been busy as you will see.

First up is some Charlie Foxtrot laser cut MDF buildings. Four of these are for the Eastern Front and a Workshop/Store (at back of picture) which I have included in the pictures, although it probably doesn't belong in this setting as the other buildings are all wood whereas this one is supposed to be brick.
The small building on the left I have copied off of Richard Clarke of Too Fat Lardie fame. The building originally comes with a tiled roof but I copied Richard's method of simply covering with cut pieces of cardboard from a cereal packet and glued on to represent wooden planking.

I have then made another orchard for a friend as he liked the one I had but I didn't want to sell mine as it gets used on the table a fair bit of the time.

Then there is over 90 x figures which are Warlord plastic which I have recently painted to go with the Soviet armour I had painted a while ago. They include an infantry platoon, a tank riding platoon, a couple of squads of scouts plus additional supports.

I have then put them all together and taken lots of pictures for your viewing pleasure.
